Alternative Breast Cancer Treatment

Breast cancer is a disease that requires continuous and intensive medical treatment. However, certain alternative methods of therapy have started to gain prominence in recent years. A number of people have chosen to abandon the traditional routes in favor of alternative breast cancer treatment, largely because such treatments are perceived to be natural, non-invasive and holistic. Some examples of alternative breast cancer treatments are special diets, traditional folk medicine, acupressure/acupuncture, herbal remedies etc.

Many alternative breast cancer treatments operate on the principle that the human body is often capable of healing itself if given the opportunity. People who choose alternative therapies also believe that conventional techniques merely treat the symptoms of a disease rather than attacking the root cause of the problem. Alternative therapists claim there are a number of natural remedies that can be used to cure most diseases, including breast cancer.

Herbal medicine:

The periwinkle, which is a common tropical herb is used in the treatment of breast cancer and other malignant growths. The alkaloid extracted from the herb is used in the preparation of vincristine, a highly effective chemotherapy agent. It must be noted that periwinkle extracts are extremely toxic and need to be administered with great care and always under medical supervision.

Mind-Body therapy:

These therapies try to take advantage of the mind's influence over the body. Some of these alternative breast cancer treatments aim at combating the disease by mobilizing the body's natural immune system using techniques of meditation and hypnosis. The therapy is usually conducted in support groups.

Meditation relaxes the patient and relieves stress, anxiety and pain. This leads to a boost in the immune system and raises the chances of breast cancer survival. The therapy also uses hypnosis, prayer and the power of suggestion to increase the efficiency of the immune system.

Diet and nutrition therapy:

Another alternative breast cancer treatment is the use of special diets to cleanse the body. Therapists who advocate this method recommend consuming ample quantities of green and orange vegetables for their beta carotene, vitamin C and vitamin E content. A low-fat diet and foods high in anti-oxidants are also known to be effective in preventing cancer as well as in slowing down the rate at which the disease spreads within the body.

Holistic medical systems:

Holistic medical systems can almost be approximated to a way of life rather than a medical treatment for particular diseases. Such systems aim to attack the root cause of all medical problems and to generally strengthen the body, mind and spirit. Some examples of holistic medical systems are traditional Chinese medicine and systems like siddha and ayurveda, which originate from India and make use of special herbs, diets, yoga and massage.
