Dealing With Breast Cancer Recurrence
Sometimes life throws us for a loop. We may feel that we have our lives in order and be happy and comfortable in our situation and then one day, out of the blue, it can all change, turning our world upside down and altering what we think about and do and how we feel. Finding out that you have breast cancer is just such a life changing event.
Before you get the information from your doctor, you will hopefully have had a chance to think about the possibility of having this cancer and what it might mean. This can help to soften the blow, but if the news comes that you have tested positive for cancer, it will still be a blow.
A million questions arise about your condition. Of course some of the early thoughts are wondering if you will manage to survive this disease or not. Then come questions of how to do it. Figuring out how to work your life around your condition soon change to recognition that your life will not be the same, especially during and treatment and recovery.
Of course you doctor is the person best able to help you through some of these difficult times. He or she can answer some of your questions. They will help you to understand your individual case and what treatment options are available to you and help you develop a plan for fighting the cancer.
With the numerous and strenuous doctor’s appointments, tests and therapies, all added to your general stress about the situation and concerns for your health, you will likely feel overwhelmed. It can be hard to think about anything else. There is so much to consider and ponder and worry about.
One thing many people worry about is breast cancer recurrence. Someone who has had breast cancer in the past, even after successful treatment, is at an increased risk of developing it again in the future. This is an unfortunate fact about the disease.
Some tests can be done to predict the likelihood of breast cancer recurrence based on gene expression. If it appears you are likely to develop it again, a more aggressive approach might be taken to get rid of it.
The likelihood of breast cancer recurrence is higher in younger women than in those who are older. This may be for a number of reasons including the changing nature of the breasts throughout the menstrual cycle as well as in nursing infants.
Some steps that are taken to prevent breast cancer recurrence include radiation therapy after surgery to destroy any cancerous cells that may have been left behind. Also, certain drugs are used to help decrease the chances of such a recurrence.
