Breast Cancer Recurrence Treatment

If you have been through the life-changing experience of breast cancer treatment and survival, your million dollar question is “will it come back?”. During the course of their treatment, you would have felt supported, protected, monitored and cared-for by your doctors, family and friends. However, after the completion of the treatment, feelings of disorientation and often depression might creep in. This can lead to a great deal of stress, anxiety and fear that the disease might return to haunt you again.

It is important to educate yourself on the likelihood of recurrence, the signs to watch out for and the steps to take to avoid recurrence. Taking active steps to learn about recurrence and to prevent it from happening can help in greatly reducing your feelings of helplessness and vulnerability.

What Is Recurrence?

If a patient who has recovered successfully from a certain type of cancer is later diagnosed to have the same type of cancer again, it is known as a recurrence. In order to call it a recurrence, doctors generally consider that a period of at least a year must have elapsed between the time the previous treatment was concluded and the time the cancer is re-detected. If the period is much less than a year, the original treatment is just assumed to have failed in curing the cancer.

Recurrences are classified into three types – local, regional and distant. Local recurrences occur close to the region in which the original cancer was diagnosed (the breasts), regional recurrences occur in close to the breasts in the lymph nodes and distant recurrences occur at a region that is far from the originally infected area, usually in the bones, lungs or liver. The type of breast cancer recurrence treatment that is appropriate for you depends to a great extent on your type of recurrence.

The Chances Of Recurrence

It is important to keep in mind that not all women have recurrence. Many women survive their ordeal and never require breast cancer recurrence treatment. They live long, happy and cancer-free lives. There are a number of different types of breast cancers, which are diagnosed at different stages in different women. Moreover, not all types of breast cancers receive similar treatments and not all women respond identically to their therapy. Different women also tend to have different side effects to their treatments. All these factors, not to mention your family history of cancer, your medical history, weight, diet etc, go into determining the likelihood recurrence.

The signs of recurrence:

Needless to say, you should immediately consult your doctor if you find any suspicious changes in the area where your surgery was performed. You should check for skin lumps, reddening, swelling, scaling or any changes to your nipple. You should also watch out for symptoms such as weight loss, fevers, bone or abdominal pains and headaches. Although all of these symptoms can be explained by causes unrelated to breast cancer, it is never a bad idea to be safe.

Recurrence Treatment

In many ways, breast cancer has come to be seen as an almost chronic condition-- if a particular treatment fails, another one might work. New and enhanced breast cancer recurrence treatments continue to be discovered, targeting different types of recurrence.
