The Prevention And Treatment Of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer (lung cancer is first). It occurs in both women and men. It is the fifth leading cause of cancer related death. Although genetics do play a role in the development of breast cancer and some types of tissue are more prone to develop it, in most cases it is unknown why the cancer does develop.

With all of the understanding of the severity of breast cancer and the seeming increase in incidence of breast cancer, it’s important to understand how to prevent it. There are a number of things that can be done to aid in preventing the development of this disease.

Those who exercise regularly are less likely to develop breast cancer. Weight loss, avoiding stress and alcohol as well as toxic chemicals and environmental pollutants can all help in preventing breast cancer. Also, including dried beans, whole grains and vegetables in your diet can help. Selenium is a mineral found in Brazil nuts , and when it’s combined with natural sources of vitamin E it is proven to reduce the risk of cancer.

Of course there is no sure prevention, though. In some cases the cancer will develop, despite our best efforts to prevent it. Genetic and other factors sometimes cannot be overcome, and breast cancer is found. In this case, the first consideration is looking into treatment of breast cancer.

There are a number of treatments that are used, usually a few in combination with each other, to treat breast cancer. The treatment of breast cancer depends very much on a number of factors about the specific case. Some such factors are what stage the cancer is in and the size, location and grade of the tumor. The following is an incomplete list of what is available for the treatment of breast cancer.
The mainstay for the treatment of breast cancer is surgery. There are a few different types of surgery that are used, based on the severity of the case. In some cases a lumpectomy, or just the removal of the lump is enough. If the cancer has progressed further, though, a mastectomy may be necessary. Lymph node dissection is another breast cancer surgery that might be used.

In cases where the cancer has developed to a further stage, chemotherapy will be necessary. This is a grueling and very difficult treatment but a necessary one to kill cancer in its later stages.

After surgery radiation might be used in order to kill any remaining cancer cells and help to prevent recurrence. Hormone therapy can also be effective in this way. Complementary and holistic medicine can also be effective when used with traditional therapies.
